Pure Ear Age

How old is your hearing? Tap or click when you can no longer hear the tone.

Voice reads your result aloud when the test finishes.

As we age, our ability to hear high-pitched sounds decreases. This test plays a tone that rises in pitch. Tap or click the button when you can no longer hear it.

Headphones recommended. Many laptop speakers cannot reproduce high frequencies. If you hear nothing at all, check your volume and try headphones.

The science behind the test

As we age, our ability to hear high-pitched sounds decreases. This is called presbycusis, a natural process caused by changes in the inner ear.

The cochlea (a spiral-shaped organ in your ear) contains thousands of hair cells that detect different frequencies. High-frequency sounds are detected by cells at the base of the cochlea. These cells are more exposed to wear and do not regenerate when damaged. Low-frequency cells, at the other end, tend to last longer.

Research shows a rough pattern. This table maps typical maximum audible frequency to estimated hearing age:

Max frequency (Hz)Typical hearing age
20,000Under 15
17,00020s
15,000Late 30s
12,000Mid 50s
10,000Mid 60s
8,00070+
